Zirconia dental implantsA dental implant is a close replica of a real tooth. It’s the only tooth replacement method to treat both the root and the crown. 500,000 people every year are choosing dental implants to replace their missing teeth, and for good reasons. With over a 95% success rate and a lifespan that can span for decades, they are a smart choice to complete your smile. Did you know not all dental implants are the same? You can choose between titanium or zirconia. Here’s what you need to know to make the best investment for your smile.

Titanium VS Zirconia

Titanium has been the go-to material for dental implants for decades because it integrates well with the body. However, zirconia has also become a popular option. Implants made of zirconia dioxide offer a metal-free alternative to titanium. Although both are effective and successful, there are also plenty of differences.

Pros and Cons of Zirconia

Zirconia has held commonplace in implant dentistry since the early 1990s. According to an article in Periodontology, zirconia has many benefits, like:

  • Compatible with human tissue.
  • Low bacterial attraction.
  • Strong and decent fracture resistance.
  • Low corrosion risk.
  • Better aesthetics than titanium.

Although zirconia has many advantages, there are some disadvantages, like a slightly higher failure rate. It can also deteriorate over time, creating tiny cracks. Grinding and clenching teeth can also weaken the material. Not to mention, the implant is also only available in one piece.

Pros and Cons of Titanium

Titanium implants consist of two-piece varieties that provide better angling for positioning. However, titanium has other advantages, including:

  • Biocompatible and integrates well with the body.
  • Lower failure rate than zirconia.
  • High corrosion resistance.
  • Durable and lightweight.

While titanium is a trusted material, it can cause allergic reactions in some patients, but the risk is minimal. Patients with certain autoimmune conditions can be affected by metal ions released from the implant, which can cause irritation and inflammation. Although the implant will be hidden in your gum tissue, the dark metal can show through, causing a shadow.

Which Is the Right Material for You?

Choosing a material for your dental implant is a big decision. It’s the foundation for a successful procedure. Don’t worry, you don’t have to make the choice alone. After examining your mouth and learning more about your preferences, your dentist will recommend which material will best meet your needs.

Whether titanium or zirconia, you can treat your tooth loss once and for all. You’ll never have to budget for replacements or worry about people finding out your teeth aren’t real. You’ll invest in a solution that looks and feels natural using a method that can last for 30 years or longer.
